Salt and Light

Good Morning!  Today I was thinking about the different situations I have been in lately that I have had to show Gods Love!  I thought I could use a refresher on what God's word has to say about it!  What else could be better than the SALT and LIGHT!

You are the salt of the earth.
But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out
 and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world.
A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:13-16

Salt

1.  Facts

     a. In ancient times salt was seen as a necessity of life.  This is because its seasoning preservative qualities was one of the most highly prized minerals.

     b. Some societies it was so highly valued that it was used for money.

     c. Whenever a city was defeated the custom was to throw salt through out the city.  This means that the city had been separated from its past.

     d. Elisha used salt to purify the water of Jericho- 2 Kings 2:20

2. Use

     a. Salt makes you thirsty.

     b. Salt is used for seasoning our food.  Job 6:6
Even when it is small and hard to even notice it makes a difference.

     c. Preserve food.

     d. Friendship

“All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and your sons and daughters with you as an ordinance forever; itis a covenant of salt forever before the Lord with you and your descendants with you.”
Numbers 18:19

3. We are the Salt of the Earth

     a. Silent witness of Christian believers.
This is how we influence others.
It may only take a little salt to flavor a whole group of people.

     b. We deny Gods plans when we deny the salt.
This means we do not communicate or associate with the lost.
We are not kind, merciful, loving, peacemaker.
We need to flavor the world so those who are not seasoned do not  perish.

     c. Jesus said "YOU ARE THE SALT"
We need to know that we are either the salt or we are the world.  We can not be both.

     d. True Friendship
This is a way we can show others the friendship Jesus offers us.
We have our heart full of love and then that spills over and others see that.

Light

1. Form of energy

     a. Always moving

     b. Jesus said he was the light of the world.

2. Jesus is the source of light.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,
“I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12

The LORD is my light and my salvation—
   whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1

3. We need to shine the light.  We to have friendships and we need to witness.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 1:7

4. We are just a reflector of Jesus.

     a. He is the true light!

     b. We need to share the light.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
He came as a witness to testify concerning that light,
so that through him all might believe.
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

John 1:6-9

5. Remeber God's word is our testimony!!

Difference between Salt and Light

1. Salt works silently

2. Salt is not a bible study but actions of love.

3. Light is something you actually see.

4. Light is when you are your faith to others.  You tell them about God.

People need to be exposed to both light and salt.  Remembering that God is the true light is very important.  We need to dig into the word, pray and listen.  Positioning ourselves just right God will use us as a reflector.

So how are you going to be the salt and light?
